Parliament speaker heralds effort to restore democracy, curb fascism

Parliament Speaker Evangelos Meimarakis met with President Karolos Papoulias on Tuesday to discuss efforts by the government to restrict the activities of the neofascist Golden Dawn.

Meimarakis said it was not enough to highlight the scourges of fascism, Nazism and political violence. «It is our duty to give the right example, to show that the unwritten laws, the unwritten rules, the moral code, the quality of political dialogue must once again come to fore,” he said.

Meimarakis told the president that Parliament would play a leading role in attempts to restore democratic processes and fight fascism.

Papoulias was to receive Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias for an update on efforts to curb the activities of Golden Dawn.

Earlier on Tuesday, the head of the main leftist opposition party SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, wrote a letter to Meimarakis, asking him to immediately call a session of Parliament’s plenary session to discuss the rise in violence linked to supporters and members of Golden Dawn. An earlier request by Tsipras for all party leaders to convene under Papoulias for emergency talks on the phenomenon was not accepted by the government
