Teachers’ strike ebbs as school sit-ins gather steam
Protest action by secondary school teachers, who staged a five-day strike last week and a two-day walkout this week over the government’s mobility scheme, appeared to be losing momentum on Wednesday amid disputes between unions, though the number of school sit-ins reached 200 as an increasing number of pupils, and parents, expressed opposition to the reforms.
Local teachers’ unions met to mull their prospects on Wednesday while the unions affiliated with different political parties disagreed about when to hold the next walkout. The participation rate of teachers in strike action has plunged, however, from 90 percent last week to 20 percent this week.
Meanwhile school sit-ins are increasing, with 70 of the 200 in Attica. In Messinia, in the Peloponnese, regional officials called on pupils to attend classes at other schools, a move that prompted pupils and teachers to occupy more schools, sources said.
