Green makeover for Thivon Avenue

Thivon Avenue, a key thoroughfare west of the center of Athens, is about to get a 5.1-billion-euro environmentally friendly makeover, the Municipality of Aegaleo announced Friday.

The project is set to feature state-of-the-art technologies such as a heat-deflecting coating for the road and sidewalks, low-energy consumption LED lights, and an innovative water supply grid and sewerage network. Authorities also plan to plant 1,210 trees, 740 bushes and 1,000 square meters of turf along the highway. The new design will allow for wheelchair accessibility along the avenue, officials said.

The project will be funded by the EU’s National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA) and the Attica Regional Authority.
