Central Athens arrests continue as part of crime sweep
Police on Monday night made 46 arrests after 483 people were detained for questioning in the run-down central Athenian neighborhoods of Omonia and Aghios Panteleimonas.
The majority of those taken into custody are people who could not produce proper identification and travel documents, while there were also cases of people who presented forged papers to the police or who were wanted by the country’s courts.
Earlier on Monday, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said that the crackdown on crime in central Athens, which began on Sunday with a large-scale police operation, would be intensified.
