Mother charged with prostituting daughter
Police have arrested 33-year-old Sofia Stoyianni in the village of Aghios Athanasios, Drama, northern Greece, for allegedly forcing her 13-year-old daughter to prostitute herself, it was reported yesterday. Local residents and the arresting officers also expressed fears that the girl’s 14-year-old sister had also been forced to have sex. Following an anonymous tipoff, an undercover police officer arrested Stoyianni after giving her 40,000 drachmas in marked bills to spend the evening with her 13-year-old child. Stoyianni has denied the charges, but in the presence of a social worker the child told police what had been common knowledge in the small community. The girls’ father, who is working in Germany, was due to arrive back in Greece yesterday. Stoyianni goes on trial today for illegally procuring. Cem paid a visit to President Costis Stephanopoulos and also met with the leader of the opposition New Democracy party, Costas Karamanlis. Stephanopoulos raised the issue of the Turkish threats to annex northern Cyprus.
