Athens University staff say they will continue strike

Administrative staff at the University of Athens said on Friday that they will be continuing with a 10th week of strike action from Monday, as Education Minister Constantinos Arvanitopoulos has taken legal action to deem the strike illegal and abusive.

A meeting of the university’s staff, who are protesting government plans to place some 1,300 administrative workers in a civil service mobility scheme, is scheduled on Monday, where they will decide how to proceed with their action.

Academics at the National Technical University of Athens on Tuesday said that they will be returning to work and launching the academic year for students on Monday with enrollments after being on strike for eight weeks in support of the administrative staff’s claims.

It was not clear on Friday whether academics at the University of Athens would be backing the call to continued action by administrative employees at that institution.
