Cyprus solution best way to remember Clerides, says Venizelos
A just solution to the Cyprus problem would be the best way of remembering late Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides, according to Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
Clerides, who worked to resolve the island’s division for many years without success, died at the age of 94 on Friday. “The best way to honor Glafcos Clerides’s memory would be to finally achieve a just and viable solution to the Cypriot problem,” said Venizelos.
On Saturday, a three-day mourning period was declared on the island. Government spokesman Christos Stylianides said that Clerides’s state funeral will be held on Tuesday with honors befitting a sitting president.
A public holiday has been declared and flags at all public buildings and schools will fly at half-staff while all public events will be canceled over the mourning period.
