The first flurries of snow fell on Tuesday on Mount Kaimaktsalan in the region of Pella in northern Greece, mobilizing authorities to spring into action to prepare for the opening on the ski season at the popular resort and other ski destinations around the country.

Local authorities in Pella said that the first snowfall occurred at an altitude of 2,090 meters, where the temperature dropped to -5 Celsius.

Rainfall is forecast for most parts of northern Greece on Wednesday and Thursday, while more snowfall is likely at higher altitudes.

Thunderstorms have also been forecast for Athens, the islands of the Ionian, central Greece and the northern and eastern Aegean, starting on Wednesday and intensifying on Thursday.
