Search continues for two people missing from deadly Rhodes floods
Rescue workers continued on Sunday searching for two people who have been missing on the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes since torrential floods in which another two people were killed hit the island on Friday.
Rescue workers recovered the body of a 27-year-old school teacher off the coast of Kremasti, in the island’s north, in the early hours of Saturday, a few hours after the body of another woman, aged 40, was found in a river bed in nearby Ialysos. The 40-year-old woman’s husband, who is believed to have been with her in a car that was swept away, is one the people still missing. The 27-year-old was a Cypriot woman, according to local reports, who was in a separate car with a 30-year-old man who is currently recovering from shock and a 53-year-old who is unaccounted for.
EMAK rescue teams are using scent-tracking dogs, helicopters and volunteers to scour the island for the missing people, while the coast guard was also conducting helicopter flights up and down the island’s coast amid fears that they may have been swept out to sea.
Local authorities on the island were due to meet on Sunday evening to discuss precautionary measures ahead of a fresh wave of storms that are forecast to hit Rhodes on Monday after Friday storms caused an estimated 5 million euros’ worth of damage to private and public property, including electricity poles and roads.
