Striking doctors dig in their heels

Doctors who work for Greece’s main public healthcare provider, EOPYY, are to continue a strike that began this week until Monday, December 9, after a failed attempt by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis to convince them to meet him.

The doctors are protesting a shake-up of primary healthcare that could lead to some of them losing their jobs and argue that Georgiadis is not being genuine with his offer to negotiate directly with them. The vice president of the EOPYY doctors’ federation, Yiannis Chronopoulos, said that the strike may even be extended beyond December 9.

Georgiadis said he had a “plan B” if the doctors refused to return to work. “They will not like it,” he said without giving details.
