Thessaloniki man facing charges over illegal antiquities hoard

Police seized 68 Roman and Byzantine coins after raiding the home of a 45-year-old man in Thessaloniki on Saturday.

They also found 14 bronze Byzantine rings, a metal detector and other equipment.

The man faces charges of breaking Greece’s antiquities law, which does not permit illegal excavations to take place or for relics to be held privately.

The items recovered from the man’s house were passed to the local antiquities ephorate.
