Police chase off group of scrap collectors from Fylis landfill

Dozens of police officers were dispatched to the Greek capital’s main landfill in Fylis, northwest of Athens, after the premises was raided by a group of around 100 scavengers looking for scrap metal and other materials that can be sold for cash.

Operations at the landfill had to be stopped for several hours amid concerns for the scrap collectors’ safety around they heavy machinery used at the dump, as police cleared the the area.

The landfill, which has been forced to close down on numerous occasions due to such raids despite improving security measures such as raising peripheral walls, went back into operation shortly after 1 p.m.

The operator of the landfill is due to launch a tender on December 24 for a private security firm to take on the protection of the premises.
