Greek businessman Kouris arrested on fresh debt charges

Businessman Giorgos Kouris, publisher of Avriani newspaper and owner of now-defunct Alter TV, was arrested on Tuesday over debts of about 2.7 million euros to the state.

Kouris, 77, was released on bail in May last year after being arrested in connection with a 1.5-million-euro debt owed by Alter.

His son, Andreas, was also arrested and released.

Tuesday’s arrest relates to a different debt, which the businessman is expected to settle by agreeing a payment plan with authorities.

He was arrested 100 meters from his house by two undercover policemen pretending to be a taxi driver and passenger.

It was not clear why authorities chose this method to nab the businessman.
