Conservative MP slammed after describing junta as a ‘revolution’
New Democracy on Wednesday resisted calls for Pieria lawmaker Dimitris Christoyiannis to be ousted from the party after he described Greece’s 1967-74 junta as a “revolution.”
The MP made the comment during a TV panel discussion, after being confronted by a SYRIZA lawmaker who argued that New Democracy accusing SYRIZA of having members who are sympathetic toward terrorism was the same as some New Democracy members looking on the military dictatorship fondly.
“You cannot place the junta sympathizer in the same bracket as the terrorist,” Christoyiannis said. “It is not the same thing. At the time the junta was a revolution.”
SYRIZA called on the conservatives to oust the lawmaker to prove that they did not agree with his view.
PASOK called his remarks “unacceptable and hair-raising” and called for him to be disciplined.
