Taxi carrying cannabis compounded after police chase in Athens

Police in Athens compounded a taxi and arrested its driver and passenger late on Thursday after the vehicle refused to stop for an inspection in the neighborhood of Neos Cosmos, tried to run down a police motorcycle and was found to contain 65 kilograms of cannabis.

The suspects, both Albanian nationals, were to face an Athens prosecutor on Friday on a string of charges including resisting attempted grievous bodily harm, drug dealing and highway code violations.

Officers of the force’s motorcycle-riding DIAS force gave chase after the vehicle ran a red light. The driver of the taxi subsequently tried to knock down one of the police motorcycles, according to sources, prompting police to fire in the air as a warning. It was unclear whether the taxi was a stolen vehicle.
