Ankara asks Greece to extradite two jailed suspects
As Greece awaits the extradition from Turkey of the former head of Hellenic Postbank, Angelos Filippidis, Ankara has requested that Athens send two suspects being held in Greek jails across the Aegean to stand trial.
Kathimerini understands that in the past few days, Turkey has requested that a 54-year-old Greek man arrested last summer in connection to an arms-laden speedboat stopped off the island of Chios be sent to Turkey as he is considered to be connected to the outlawed leftist Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C).
Two Greeks and two Turks were arrested at the time.
The Supreme Court has ruled against the extradition of the two Turks, Hasan Biber and Mehmet Yayla, in connection with the case.
Sources told Kathimerini that Turkish authorities have also requested that a suspected human trafficker currently being held in custody on Chios be extradited.
Meanwhile, Greece has asked for Filippidis’s detention to be extended until Turkey’s courts decide on his extradition.
The banker’s lawyer, Thanassis Varlamis, told Kathimerini that he is trying to speed up his client’s return to Greece.
