Athens police close in on mugging racket that targeted cabbies
Police in Athens said on Tuesday that they had arrested a 23-year-old Roma man, near Zefyri, northwest of Athens, and were seeking another six men, aged between 17 and 23, in connection with a racket that has been mugging tax drivers in different parts of Attica.
Members of the racket are alleged to have hailed taxis in various neighborhoods and asked to be taken to Roma settlements in Zefyri and Acharnes, where, together with accomplices, they would mug the driver.
In a related development, a 40-year-old resident of the Roma camp in Acharnes faced a prosecutor on Tuesday in connection with the activities of another criminal ring believed to be behind 102 burglaries in homes in Acharnes, Thrakomakedones, Aghios Stefanos and Kapandriti.
