Dead inmate suffered separate beatings, prosecutor hears

An Albanian inmate who died in a prison in northern Greece last week under circumstances that are currently being investigated had sustained multiple injuries at different times, the investigating prosecutor heard on Monday.

Guards from Malandrino jail in central Greece, where 42-year-old Ilie Kareli stabbed a prison officer to death before being transferred to Nigrita Prison and placed in solitary confinement, said he did not have burns on his hands when he left their custody. Guards at Nigrita, meanwhile, said they noticed bruising on his body when he arrived.

The coroner who conducted the autopsy on Kareli’s body also found signs that he may have been beaten on the soles of his feet.
