Venizelos says both election results must be considered

PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos said on Thursday that the results of the European Parliament elections on Sunday would have to be balanced against the outcome of the local polls that take place on the same day.

Speaking to Skai TV on Thursday night, Venizelos insisted that both elections results would have to be taken into account to decide where the government and the opposition stand. “This is the only way that nobody will be able to say that there is a problem with [the coalition’s] legitimacy the day after the elections,” he said.

PASOK is running as part of the center-left Olive Tree (Elia) alliance in the European elections and has not nominated any of its own candidates for the local vote, where it is only supporting certain candidates.

Venizelos also accused SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras of trying to appeal to Golden Dawn supporters and trying to undermine stability. “He wags his finger, makes threats, blackmails and uses foul language,” said Venizelos of the opposition leader. “He is creating the conditions for a symbolic civil war. He is driving away investors.”
