Six conditionally released over Lakkos Karantzas gold mining protest

Six people charged with a string of criminal offenses in connection to protests against gold mining operations at Lakkos Karantzas in Halkidiki, northern Greece, were conditionally released on Monday after facing a magistrate in Polygyros.

Another 23 people being tried in the same case were expected to face the magistrate Tuesday and Wednesday.

The defendants, all residents of Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, are accused of participating in a protest rally on May 12 last year against a mining company conducting illegal work in the area.

The incident took place when a group of 60 protesting women clashed with riot police forces.
