Crete crocodile conundrum persists as traps are set

Authorities on Crete on Friday seemed no closer to a solution to the conundrum of what to do with a 2-meter crocodile spotted at the Potami Dam on the Amari plain.

Dubbed Manolios or Sifis by its growing number of fans, the crocodile may not pose a direct threat yet, but it is a predator and should be viewed with caution, according to experts.

Special teams have placed two separate baited traps at the dam in the hopes of capturing the reptile, though a decision has yet to be reached as to where it will be taken when and if this is accomplished. Talks are being held with the Attica Zoological Park and the National Center of Marine Research.

Another solution put forward by Amari Mayor Stefanos Simantiras is to allow Manolios to stay put as a potential attraction.
