New warrants issued against Maziotis, accomplice

Judicial authorities on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Revolutionary Struggle leader Nikos Maziotis and for a suspected accomplice of the leftist guerrilla, who was not named, sources said.

The accomplice is believed to have collaborated with Maziotis in previous armed robberies.

The warrant for Maziotis, who has been under armed guard at an Athens hospital since he was arrested on Wednesday following a shootout with police, relates to new charges issued against him on Thursday. A 50-year jail term he was convicted of in absentia last year is deemed to have commenced immediately after his arrest.

The new charges leveled against Maziotis include attempted manslaughter, illegal use of firearms, illegal possession of firearms and explosives, armed robbery, running a criminal organization and fraud.
