SYRIZA MEP to raise German war ‘debts’ at Euro Parliament

SYRIZA MEP Manolis Glezos, 92, is planning to raise the issue of Germany’s Second World War reparations to Greece for Nazi crimes at the European Parliament in September.

Speaking to Deutsche Welle on Monday, the war hero noted that the issue would be raised under the umbrella of the Party of the European Left.

In his comments Glezos referred to Germany’s “debts,” as opposed to reparations, to the Greek state and to private citizens.

The SYRIZA official insists that the compensation that Greece received following the war fell short of the 7.2 billion euros it originally claimed, while the country was also forced by the Nazis to take out an “occupational loan.”

Meanwhile, Germany denies owing anything to Greece after the sum of 115 million German marks was paid in 1960, one of 12 war compensation agreements signed with Western countries.
