Rain and storms with hail expected in many parts of Greece

Rain and possible storms are expected in many parts of Greece on Tuesday, and particularly in the islands of the Ionian and on mainland Greece, where hailstorms are also likely, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service reported.

In Athens, a sunny start to the day is expected to give way by lunchtime to cloudy skies and sporadic rains, which may be quite strong in parts, especially north of the capital. Winds will be southerly and at speeds of 3-5 Beaufort, while the temperature will range from a midday high of 30 degrees Celsius to a nighttime low of 20C.

Downpours are also expected in Thessaloniki throughout the course the day, with easterly winds reaching 6 on the Beaufort scale at sea but ebbing at night as they shift to northerlies. Temperatures in the northern port city will reach 27C at midday.

The islands of the Ionian Sea and western parts of the country should also brace for strong showers, which will peter off later in the evening, as well as a drop in temperatures, with the maximum expected at 28 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures will also be lower in the islands of the Cyclades and Crete, reaching a maximum 29C, and showers are expected to be brief, thought quite strong in parts.

The wet weather is expected to continue in most parts of Greece on Wednesday, spreading from the west to the east.
