Thessaloniki pair demanded cash to stop online smear campaign

A 49-year-old municipal employee and another man, aged 47, faced a Thessaloniki prosecutor on Friday after being arrested for allegedly demanding cash in order to cease an online attack against a 66-year-old individual.

According to police reports, the two suspects originally demanded 120,000 euros from the 66-year-old in order to stop posting libelous and threatening comments against his person on social networking websites.

They later agreed to a payoff of 45,000 euros with 5,000 euros to be paid upfront.

The 47-year-old was arrested on Thursday after accepting the money in marked bills.

The second suspect was arrested shortly after.
