Man claiming to have been passenger in runaway truck comes forward
A new witness into the causes of deadly crash in northern Greece on Sunday may have come forward after a man presented himself to authorities late on Monday claiming to have been a passenger in the truck that plowed into dozens of cars on the Egnatia Highway between Veria and Thessaloniki, killing five motorists and injuring at least 30.
Skai reported that the man, whose identity has not been made public, approached residents of a village near the site of the crash and asked to be directed to the nearest police station. He appears to have suffered minor injuries, the report said, without releasing any additional details.
The driver of the truck, a 39-year-old Romanian national who was arrested shortly after the incident, is due to appear before a prosecutor on Thursday to present his defense, though he had said in his initial deposition on Monday that his brakes failed on a downhill stretch of the road and he was unable to regain control of the vehicle before careening into more than 30 cars that had come to a stop on the highway as roadworks were under way.
A second suspect, the contractor in charge of the roadworks, is due to appear before the prosecutor on Tuesday.
Authorities had not been aware of the presence of a second person in the truck.
