Charges brought against OKANA chiefs over finances

A corruption prosecutor on Thursday brought charges relating to financial mismanagement of millions of euros in state funding against the former chairwoman of the Organization Against Drugs (OKANA), Melpomeni Malliori, and against Dimitris Platanias, OKANA’s former general manager.

According to the results of a judicial probe, which was triggered by complaints lodged in 2011 and 2012, a 20-million-euro contract for the creation of 17 rehabilitation centers and other facilities across the country was never realized and the funds were allegedly used to cover the salaries of OKANA staff.

Another 5.5 million euros in state funds was allegedly used for internal lending rather than for the operational needs of OKANA centers that they had been destined for.
