Over 1,500 buildings and vehicles damaged in flash floods

Applications for compensation following heavy showers last Friday had reached 1,085 for homes and businesses and 422 for vehicles by Thursday, while 395 people had filed for emergency compensation set at 586 euros.

The data was presented in Parliament by Interior Minister Argyris Dinopoulos on Thursday following a question tabled by PASOK deputy Apostolos Kaklamanis. The minister said that more compensation demands were expected by Friday, the final day for submitting applications.

Dinopoulos also noted that all of the 25 Attica municipalities which had suffered damage during last week’s flash floods were eligible to apply for funding for flood protection works.

The 900,000 euro budget set aside by the ministry for flood protection works was largely insufficient, according to the minister, who noted that about 1.5 to 2 billion euros were needed. He added, however, that works were expected to proceed through the release of EU funding following an order by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
