Police help with employee checks in Thessaloniki

Police were called in on Wednesday to ensure that public administration inspectors in Thessaloniki could carry out checks on the work contracts of local authority employees.

The inspectors attempted last week to check all the contracts that were made permanent, from fixed-term, in 2006 as the government believes that in many cases this was done illegally. However, municipal employees blocked that attempt and Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris asked the police to ensure that Wednesday’s checks went ahead.

Also on Wednesday, Halandri Mayor Simos Roussos appeared before an appeals court prosecutor who is investigating a group of mayors that are refusing to cooperate with the Administrative Reform Ministry, which wants to evaluate the performance of their employees.

Roussos labeled the assessment “unconstitutional” as he left the prosecutor’s office.
