Patra mayor defends refusal to hand over employees’ details

Patra Mayor Costas Peletidis on Thursday submitted a four-page written deposition to the prosecutor investigating a group of local authority chiefs who have refused to cooperate with the Administrative Reform Ministry over checks on municipal employees.

Peletidis has refused to hand over the details of 324 municipal workers who had their contracts made permanent in 2006.

The government believes some of these workers were awarded their contracts illegally.

Peletidis insisted that they had all been hired legally.

He also said the municipality is conducting its own checks on whether workers have used false qualifications to obtain their jobs.

“This process is under way and about 90 percent of employees have been checked,” he said.

“Two workers have been fired so far and another two are due to face a disciplinary panel.”
