Ties between terror groups probed
Counterterrorism officers were seeking to broaden their investigation into suspected links between Greek domestic terrorist organizations following the arrest Monday of Angeliki Spyropoulou, an alleged accomplice of November 17 terrorist Christodoulos Xeros, and two people with suspected links to convicted members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire guerrilla group.
Police are probing apparent links between Xeros, Conspiracy and another violent guerrilla group known as Sect of Revolutionaries, whose members continue to elude authorities. Investigators have found references to the latter group in the encrypted correspondence of Xeros, jailed members of Conspiracy and other terrorist suspects, Kathimerini understands.
Authorities hope that Monday’s three arrests will shed further light on the activities and operation methods of various guerrilla groups still operating in Greece.
Spyropoulou, 22, was arrested on the island of Salamina Monday morning at a house occupied by the 60-year-old mother of two convicted Conspiracy members, brothers Gerasimos and Christos Tsakalos.
Officers also arrested a 26-year-old woman, believed to be Gerasimos’s girlfriend.
The two women are to face an investigating magistrate today on charges of harboring a criminal. Spyropoulou, the alleged Xeros accomplice, has until Thursday to prepare her defense on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization. According to counterterrorism sources, the 22-year-old had a key role in a thwarted plot to get jailed members of Conspiracy out of Attica’s Korydallos Prison.
