Police to launch scheme for Athens crime crackdown

The Greek Police is planning to enforce a new scheme in the coming days aimed at curbing crime in the capital’s historic center as well as other central districts and increasing a sense of safety for citizens, the force said in a statement.

The scheme foresees an increase in the number of police officers patrolling areas with high crime rates as well as targeted raids on drug trafficking, the contraband goods trade and prostitution rackets.

The patrols and raids will be enforced by staff from police precincts based in Omonia, Acropolis, Exarchia, Aghios Panteleimonas and Kypseli who will be exclusively devoted to the scheme, the statement said.
