Bullying victim buried on Crete
As hundreds of mourners gathered on Tuesday in the Cretan village of Selli for the funeral of a 20-year-old whose body was found on Sunday in the northwestern Greek city of Ioannina, a private investigator, Giorgos Tsoukalis, acting on behalf of the family, said he was close to discovering what had prompted Vangelis Giakoumakis to take his own life.
Giakoumakis killed himself on February 6 in a field just a few hundred meters away from his college dormitory. Investigations have turned up evidence that the young man was repeatedly and violently abused by fellow students.
“Witnesses are starting to see the need to talk,” Tsoukalis told Kathimerini. “In my experience, bullying victims have a hard time talking about it.”
