Retiree held for supermarket job

A 73-year-old retired cook was arrested late on Friday on suspicion of having robbed an Athens supermarket with a fake gun, police said yesterday. Officers managed to link the pensioner, whose name was not made public, with the 280-euro robbery through witness descriptions of the getaway car. The suspect had allegedly used his own vehicle, whose number plates had been clumsily disguised, to make his escape after robbing the Dia supermarket at 88 Ilioupoleos Street in the eastern suburb of Dafni. The 73-year-old, who was arrested hours later in his Dafni home, told police he needed the money to pay off his debts. Police said he also confessed to a bungled attempt to rob a bank in Pangrati on September 2 – using a real shotgun. But the suspect got stuck in the revolving door and narrowly escaped capture by clerks at the Emporiki Bank branch at 162 Filolaou Street.
