Crete, Dodecanese shaken A moderately strong earthquake registering 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred under the seabed to the west of Kos in the Dodecanese Islands on Saturday afternoon but caused no injuries or damage. The epicenter was some 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Athens. The quake was particularly strongly felt in northeastern Crete. Arsonist fireman A 20-year-old volunteer fireman from Samos has been arrested for allegedly lighting a series of forest fires on the eastern Aegean island over the past few weeks. Police said Karlovassi resident Sofianos Triandafyllou, who was formally accused of arson on Saturday, has confessed to the charges. At least a dozen forest fires broke out around Karlovassi over the past six weeks. Illegal immigrants Harbor police in Piraeus have arrested two Greeks and a Pakistani for alleged membership in a gang that smuggled into Greece illegal immigrants from Pakistan who posed as merchant seamen, the Merchant Marine Ministry said on Saturday.
