Suburban light railway racing ahead

May 2004 is the date the 42 kilometers of the suburban light railway will come into operation, provided that the problems of rolling stock construction at Skaramangas have been solved. Trains will run from the transport hub SKA at Acharnes to the airport at Spata, taking an estimated time of 35 minutes and carrying 120,000 people daily. Passengers will have the option of the express train (four stops) or the regular train (eight stops). From SKA to Rendi, the railway will have to make do with the existing line, which needs to be upgraded. On the 11-kilometer-long stretch between the airport and the metro station of Doukissis Plakentias, seven specially adapted metro trains will run. Seven railway trains and three metro trains are scheduled to depart from the airport each hour.
