Five held for attack on Madrid consulate
MADRID (AFP) – Five members of a Spanish anarchist cell were placed in custody in Barcelona on Saturday on charges connected with a parcel bomb attack on the Greek consulate in Madrid earlier this month and other acts of urban terrorism, judicial sources said. One of those detained had been arrested in Thessaloniki during anti-globalization riots at the June 21 EU summit. The five are accused of conspiracy to assassinate, membership of a terrorist group, the manufacture and possession of explosive and incendiary devices, and possession of illegal arms. They were arrested on Monday on suspicion of sending a booby-trapped book parcel – which did not explode – to the Greek consulate on September 8. The suspects have also been charged with conspiracy to assassinate for their alleged surveillance, with intention to kill, of a Catalan regional government adviser and a journalist.
