Woman bleeds to death after cat scratch

A pet Siamese cat was being treated yesterday as the main suspect in the death of an elderly Thessaloniki lady found in a pool of blood in her flat late on Wednesday. Initially, it appeared that the 76-year-old pensioner – whose name was not made public – had been murdered. But police believe the victim, who suffered from varicose veins, bled to death after being badly scratched by her cat. «The woman apparently didn’t pay much attention to the cut at first,» Thessaloniki coroner Dimitris Psaroulis told Kathimerini yesterday. «However, when she saw she could not stop the bleeding, she tried to seek help but fainted. The result would have been the same had she been accidentally cut on the same spot by anything else, a nail for example.» Psaroulis is investigating whether the woman had been taking medication that might have prevented her blood from clotting.
