Electronic tag scheme for Greek prisoners ready

Greece is ready to launch a pilot scheme that will allow 250 prisoners to leave prison early over the next 18 months as long as they wear an electronic tag on their ankles so that authorities can monitor their movements.

The company that was awarded the contract to develop the scheme has completed its work and inmates have been told that they can apply to be among the 250 who will be allowed to test the project.

Each prisoner will be asked to pay 12.50 euros a day for the use of the electronic ankle bracelet unless they can prove they do not have the economic means to do so. Only inmates who have been sentenced to serve sentences of up to 10 years will be eligible for the program.
