Hospital staff to hold 24-hour strike to protest austerity impact
Doctors and nurses employed at state hospitals, as well as ambulance workers, are to walk off the job on Wednesday in an anti-austerity protest.
Unions called the 24-hour strike to protest “the collapse” of the public health system due to austerity policies of subsequent governments.
According to the Federation of Greek Hospital Doctors (OENGE), public hospitals are “in a state of economic asphyxiation” with an immediate cash injection of 600 million euros necessary to keep them functioning.
Demonstrations are planned for Athens and other major cities at around noon.
