Turkish moves in Aegean not seen as threat by ministries

Sources at the ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs on Friday said that recent moves by Ankara in the Aegean should not form an obstacle to discussing confidence-building measures as agreed by the two governments.

The comments came after Turkey earlier this week issued a maritime order (Navtex) reserving a section of the Aegean under Greek air space for military exercises from June 15 to December 31 without the approval of Greek authorities.

The Navtex comes after a Turkish Navy ship entered a firing range off the Greek island of Andros earlier this week and two Turkish frigates conducting exercises off the coast of Crete sailed right up to the border between international and Greek territorial waters off Souda Bay in May.
