Police, migrants clean up Chios reception center
Dozens of policemen on Chios, along with migrants who have arrived on the island, worked together on Saturday to clean a reception center in the Mersinidi area of the island.
“Unfortunately, most refugees who come here only stay a day and then leave,” said local police chief Dimitris Avgerinos, who oversaw the effort. “As a result, they are not interested in the state of the place.”
Avgerinos called on volunteers to help authorities keep reception centers clean.
Greece’s Aegean islands have seen a significant rise in the number of refugees and economic migrants reaching them over the last few months as they flee countries like Syria and Afghanistan.
