Toxic recycling plant’s license revoked

The Environment Ministry said on Wednesday it will revoke the license of a recycling plant in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, where a fire earlier this month sent toxic smoke wafting over the capital for days.

The decision was taken after environmental inspectors delivered their report on the site. The officials found toxic waste and unsorted rubbish, including non-recyclable materials, at the site during their checks. There was also no fire-extinguishing system.

The environmental inspectors are due to question the plant’s owner, who they will likely fine. The ministry said that it had also sent the information it gathered to the prosecutor’s office.
