Free food, electricity on way for crisis-hit Greek families

More than 630,000 people who applied for meal vouchers, free electricity or subsidized rent will be able to find out from Friday if they have qualified for assistance under the government’s program to tackle the “humanitarian crisis.”

The government said on Wednesday that a total of 300,226 applications concerning 633,288 people were received.

A total of 66,442 applications (affecting 87,541 people) for rent subsides were approved. Almost 89,300 families (212,216 people) will receive free electricity.

More than 145,359 families (349,825 people) will receive meal vouchers.

People qualifying for free food will be given a card issued by National Bank which will allow them to purchase food products worth 70 to 220 euros a month, depending on whether they are single or part of a family.
