Identical ratings for SYRIZA, ND, suggests new poll
SYRIZA and New Democracy are neck and neck almost two weeks before the September 20 elections, according to the latest opinion poll carried out by the University of Macedonia for Skai and Kathimerini.
The survey puts the two parties on 27 percent apiece, which means that support for New Democracy has risen by five points over the last week, while SYRIZA’s backing has edged up by just two points.
Golden Dawn remains in third on 6.5 percent, followed by the Communist Party on 6, Potami on 5.5, PASOK and the Union of Centrists on 4.5, and Popular Unity on 4 percent. Independent Greeks is seen slipping further from the 3 percent threshold for entering Parliament. The nationalist party is down to 1.5 percent from 2 percent last week.
Apart from level pegging in terms of voter support, SYRIZA and New Democracy are also equals when it comes to the popularity of their leaders. Alexis Tsipras and Evangelos Meimarakis both garner 27.5 percent positive ratings from voters.
The closeness of the contest will add to the tension of the upcoming leaders’ debates, the details of which were agreed yesterday. All the party leaders will take part in a televised discussion on Wednesday, September 9, while just Tsipras and Meimarakis will face off on September 14.
The debates were made possible after Independent Greeks leader Panos Kammenos agreed to postpone his appearence at the Thessaloniki International Fair, which was due on September 9.
