A 53-year-old Roma woman who was detained on Saturday for allegedly taking part in an attempt to abduct a child from a supermarket in Vari, southern Athens, was arrested on Monday.
The woman is alleged to have helped another, younger Roma woman who took the three-year-old child from his mother escape before the police arrived.
According to authorities, the abduction was prevented when the child’s mother notice the main suspect walking out of the store with her child. When she was confronted, the Roma woman said she had mistaken the child for her son.
The 53-year-old is then alleged to have brought another child, which she claimed was the suspect’s. The younger woman disappeared during the confusion that followed.
