Central Macedonia governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas has said he will not back any of the two candidates in the runoff vote for the New Democracy leadership on Sunday, instead urging conservative supporters to vote according to their own personal conscience.
“The free will of the party’s friends must not be manipulated. This is something that everyone must respect,” Tzitzikostas said on Tuesday.
Tzitzikostas failed to reach the second round which will see former House speaker Evangelos Meimarakis take on former administrative reform minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for helm of Greece's main opposition party.
Also-ran Adonis Georgiadis, an ex minister, has already thrown his weight behind Mitsotakis.
