Brothers used flower power for drug runs

Two brothers from Albania have been arrested in northern Greece on suspicion of smuggling large quantities of heroin into the country, using flower shipments to throw border sniffer dogs off the scent, police said yesterday. The two men, whose names were not made public, were detained after officers found a total of 22 kilos of heroin hidden in a glasshouse on a flower farm in Thermi, on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, where one of the brothers worked. The total street value of the drugs is estimated at 2.5 million euros. Police said the two regularly drove lorries to Albania with flower shipments from the farm. On their way back, they allegedly stashed parcels of heroin and hashish in the fragrant lorry, whose lingering flower perfume prevented the police dogs from sniffing out the drugs.
