Fire service ‘ill-prepared,’ association warns

With the wildfire season looming, the Hellenic Association of Fire Service Officers Thursday warned that the service lacks adequate equipment and vehicles.

Many of the fleet’s vehicles are more than 40 years old and in dire need of replacement or repair, according to the association, which noted that firefighter uniforms are also in short supply.

The fact that large numbers of migrants are staying in makeshift camps poses a challenge to firefighters, who have been called to extinguish two fires in such camps recently.

A total of 40 wildfires were reported across the country over the Easter holiday, stretching the fire service’s resources.
