Firefighters battle large blaze on Rhodes, village evacuated
Firefighters on Rhodes were on Saturday battling a large fire that broke out near the village of Apolakkia in the morning, leading to the evacuation of the village.
A total of 25 firefighters were involved in the effort to contain the blaze, manning 10 fire engines. Four water-dropping planes and two helicopters aided the operation from the air.
The firefighting efforts were hampered by strong winds and high temperatures.
There were no reports of any injuries by mid-afternoon.
